Movie Review : John Carter (2012)

Directed by Andrew Stanton, John Carter is a fantasy sci-fi movie with some Prince of Persia influence and retro style advanced technology. Carter (Taylor Kitsch) is a runaway Civil War captain and then become a gold digger with a bad luck, never find the gold he’s searching and always mocked by other gold digger.

When someday after chased by Native American tribe, he stranded on a cave and then transplanted/copied/transferred to Barsoom or Mars. On Barsoom, he’s physical and power greatly increased but he’s captured by some barbarian tribe from Barsoom called them self Tharks. When he trying to escapes from Tharks, he met with Princess of Mars – Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins) and ended helping her to take back her city Helium that taken over by King of Zodanga – Sab Than (Dominic West) in return that she will help him go to the portal to get back to Earth.

This movie reunite two cast from X-Men Origin : Wolverine, Taylor Kitsch (as Gambit) and Lynn Collins (as Kayla). The presentation of this movie is a great one, it’s use a different place and time in one moment when at first it will feel confusing, but after watching until the last part of the movie, viewer will understand and the puzzle will form a complete story of John Carter journey from Earth to Mars.

I love the way this movie give viewer small portion of jokes, but still making it hilarious and remarkable.

  1. Good review. Kitsch could have definitely been a little bit more charismatic but the flick still works due to amazing special effects and some really fun and exciting action. Sad thing is that this flick was made for $250 million and barely many of it back.
